The 2023 Australian Golden Sash Awards Is Coming… Are You Ready??

The AGSA (Australian Golden Sash Awards) is a ceremony aimed at showcasing Australian beauty queens who have made the most outstanding contributions to the pageant industry during the year. The 2023 AGSA is a lead-up to the International Golden Sash Awards as there is a lot of interest from overseas queens wanting to be part of the event. Maryrose Salubre, the CEO of AGSA will be awarding beauty queens from overseas mid this year at the 2023 IGSA tentatively planned to be held in the Philippines.

National Directors are invited to nominate and vote for men and women who have competed in their respective pageant systems in the specified categories. They were also able to nominate and vote for men and women who belong to other pageant systems whom they feel deserve to be recognized. Pageant kings and queens as well were invited to nominate and vote for men and women whom they feel deserve to be recognized for their platform. All the entries were judged by the entire pageant community. You had to be a National Director, a titleholder, or a beauty pageant contestant to be eligible to vote.

The prestigious event will take place on March 16 and be held at the incredible Le Montage – A Sydney waterfront venue overlooking the sparkling lights of Iron Cove Bay. Boasting a picturesque rooftop terrace set amongst picturesque native gardens.

The awards are broken down into the following categories:

Beauty Queen of the year

The beauty queens that defined the year as a whole with ubiquitous industry demand and presence. They distinguished themselves by crossing over to the modeling industry via top-tier bookings with some of the best photographers, stylists, and clients earning next-level visibility, while at the same time giving back to the community – making them this year’s foremost star.

Ultimate Role model of the year

The beauty queens who inspire and sets positive examples for other beauty queens as well as members of their community.

Humanitarian of the year

Nothing is more important than giving back to the community, and during the past year, these beauty queens have inspired us all by putting charity first. Devoting their time, energy and status to causes big and small, these women raise awareness and bring hope to those who need it most.

Most Promising Newcomer

The most promising newcomer has had a substantial presence on the pageant and modeling scene, only their careers have just begun to take off in the past several seasons. As a newcomer to the pageant/ modeling industry, these rising stars have racked up coveted campaigns and impressive editorial work in a short period of time and are set to leave a lasting mark on the industry.

International queen of the year

MS Entertainment Network Officially Launches Mrs. Universe Official 2022 In The Philippines

MS Entertainment Network officially launched Mrs. Universe Official on May 21, 2022, at Pandan Fusion Cafe, Sct. Limbaga, Tomas Morato, QC.

Mrs. Universe Official is the brainchild of Maryrose Salubre, and Ovette Ricalde of MegaStar Productions Company will be handling the entire production and pre-events of the pageant, starting with the media launch attended by selected members of the media. Mr. Onin Mas hosted the launch, and gracing the event were Direk Lani Esteban, Ms. Elizabeth Ariones, Mr. Zayd Dabo of EZ WEALTH and Ms. Bennilyn Amigo Molina, CEO & Founder of Aura Beauty and Wellness, which are this year’s official sponsor at the Mrs. Universe Official pageant.

Mrs. Universe Official aims to bridge the gap between fashion, modeling, and pageantry and set a new standard for pageants for married women and single mothers. The organization is looking for women who are game-changers, go-getters, and highly driven individuals who can make a difference not only for themselves but in the lives of others.

Maryrose revealed that the pageant’s finals would be held from October 3-10 this year, with various pre-pageant competitions lined up to kickstart the competition.

Two candidates for Mrs. Universe Official were present during the official media launch – Christine Escalante, Mrs. Universe Official Australasia 2022, and Monique Cantalejo Rivera, Mrs. Universe Official Asia 2022. A young entrepreneur who is currently engaged and soon to be married, Tannaya Javier is a mother of two (Cali, aged 11, and Manila, aged 7) who kick-started her career in the finance banking world for over ten years – she is now moving into the world of beauty. Tannaya was originally born in the Australian Capital of ACT. After growing up in Whitsunday, Queensland, she eventually moved to Wollongong when she was 11 years old with her father, who sadly passed away in 2014; where she then moved to Sydney, NSW, to start her family and build the life, she had always wanted.

Tannaya has a real passion for dermatology and wants to share with the rest of the world what she has experienced firsthand – how she overcame her own struggles about her skin to become a public image for others who also experience the same problem she once had. Currently employed full-time with one of the major banking institutions in Australia, she’s also studying at one of the leading academies in Australia (Australian Academy of Beauty Dermal and Laser) and completing a double diploma in Beauty Business (Diploma – Beauty Therapy, Salon Management with an extension course IPL and Laser Dermal) to achieve her career goals in opening a salon of her own. Tannaya is also self-employed, a part-time beauty therapist at one of the leading spas in Australia, and a brand ambassador/model for the very own BareLife Naturals Australia and Chocolate Day Spa. Despite running a busy lifestyle, she still sets aside time to ensure she has a work/ life balance showing others that even though she has so much on her plate; she can still do everything she loves doing while maintaining time with her family and making the most out of her time multitasking with what she has a passion to do – which is to inspire others that if you put your mind to it anything is possible.

Tannaya’s advocacy promotes awareness of the Mental health of women, men, and children struggling with depression, anxiety, self-doubt, and self-awareness to help create change. She believes that advocacy is an essential means of raising awareness of mental health issues and ensuring that mental health is on the national agenda of governments. Advocacy can lead to improvements in policy, legislation, and service departments to help all walks of life overcome the struggles we face every day behind closed doors that others may not see. She has a passion for making a change towards this as she herself indirectly has had to overcome mental health issues.

Tannaya thrives on positivity, caring for others, and is focused on building her own empire that she can one day hand down to her own children. She believes this is a great platform to inspire and empower others to do the same. While she has a passion for everything, she will always endeavour to attend Mass on Sundays and make sure she attends charities to satisfy others and her own inner peace.

Tannaya’s background is half Australian and half Filipino, with her mother being full Australian and her father being full Filipino. Her father had always wanted her to get into the pageant life from a very young age, while her mother always knew beauty and fashion would become her vocation. Tannaya wants to inspire her own daughter to grow into the best woman she can be while being a role model.

Tannaya’s advice to everyone being in the pageant life is never to lose sight of yourself and always remember where you started and came from. Always be willing to help others and always support everyone while also putting yourself first. Never lose your confidence regardless of the negativity you may receive. Be yourself and love yourself. Remember being that 8-year-old girl you imagined you would be and the 80-year-old woman you want to become. Put God in the centre of everything you do, and everything will always fall together.

Seeyan Arthemy Ricardo

Seeyan Arthemy Ricardo was only four years old when he first walked the runway. It was a great honour to have done it for the late Filipino international and Hollywood fashion designer Rocky Gathercole during his “Very RG Fashion Show,” held in Sydney in July 2019.

From his first-ever fashion runway, Seeyan took an interest in joining pageants and modelling.

In his first-ever pageant, Seeyan, who just turned 5-year-old, took home the grand title of Little Mister Glam Australia 2019 and Little Glam Charity King 2019.

In the same pageant, Seeyan also won 8 other special awards, namely: Best in Talent, Best in Runway, Best in National Costume, Darling of the Press winner, People’s Choice Award winner, Netizens Choice Award, Little Mr. Friendship, and Little Mr. Congeniality.

In January 2020, Seeyan represented Australia in the Little Mister Glam International competition. He bagged the title Junior Glam Earth International 2020 and Mr. Photogenic.

In December 2020, in the Little Miss & Mister World pageant, Seeyan was awarded the Mr. Little Asia Pacific (Australia) 2020 title. He was supposed to compete in the Internationals in Myanmar, but due to Covid-19, he did not push through.

On the 11th of December 2021, Seeyan was one of the TrendyB Kids Fashion Fest models held in Eastern Creek. It’s one of the biggest kids’ runway shows featuring pageant and African-inspired clothes by Trendy B Designs. Seeyan also joined the Talent Contest part of the show, where he sang.

On the 26th of December 2021, Seeyan was awarded Mister Australasia, Little Mr. International King of the Year, Best in Swimwear, and Best in Social Media.

In other community events, Seeyan has performed and sang “True Colors” (original by Cyndi Lauper) at the 123rd Philippine Independence Day celebration hosted by APCO (Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations) on the 5th of June 2021. He was also one of 11 model kids who did a fashion show during the Philippine National Day Ball hosted by the Philippine Community Council of NSW on the 12th of June 2021. He also paraded with fellow Little Glam Australia 2019 winners at the Philippine Christmas Festival at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, Sydney, on the 9th of November 2019. He had also appeared in a couple of radio interviews, including Jinky Marsh’s Generation Hope and with Ms. Violi Calvert on Radio Tagumpay, both on Triple H 100.1fm.

Apart from modelling, fashion, and pageants, Seeyan also loves music and playing the piano; he enjoys dancing and singing; he loves swimming and playing chess for sports.

Academically, Seeyan is now in Year 2. Last year, he was 1 of only 3 Year 1 students in his class who was recognised and awarded “Citizenship Award” for his outstanding commitment to learning and impressive results in his class, particularly in Mathematics, English, and Spelling.

Seeyan loves learning and reading and wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up.

Isabel Fernandes

Isabel Fernandes, is a 14-year-old beauty queen of Portuguese origin who is passionate about inspiring young girls about beauty. Beauty can be anything and has no limits.

She enjoys dancing, singing, art, fashion, and she hopes that one day she will become a makeup artist, especially editorial makeup, exploring different art and craft of makeup.

She also has dyslexia and hopes to inspire others that there is nothing you can’t do if you put your mind and passion into it.

Her achievements include starting dancing at 2, being awarded a class performance award for Grade IV Jazz, and receiving the CPA High Achievement award from the Australasian Dance Association. In 2019, she was elected School Representative Council and Library Monitor. In 2018 and 2019, she was Mini Vinnies Leader. She helped raise money for the Homeless; she was Bethlehem College Ambassador in 2020 and 2021, and she was also selected for the gifted and talented music program at school in 2020.

Isabel was recently crowned Miss Teen Australasia and Miss Photogenic and she is also the ambassador teen model for BareLife Naturals and Chocolate Day Spa.

Aileyah-Fhel Calimag Bigornia

Aileyah-Fhel Calimag Bigornia is four years old of Filipino descent. She is passionate about pageants and modelling, following her sister’s passion.

At her age, she enjoys watching dancing, singing, pageants, and fashion shows, and she spends her time on technology to learn basic learning. She also helps her sister segregate recycled plastic cans and bottles to raise funds and donate them to the Philippines to help children in need. She spends her time at dance school at the weekend doing the Emma Wiggle ballet, tap, jazz, and singing with instruments.

Aileyah – Fel’s first exposure in public was when she joined the Trendy B designs at the Christmas Fashion show for charity fundraising at the age of 2. Also, she was one of the three awardees who won the best-dressed guest at the TendyB Kids Fashion show last year, 2021.

Aileyah-Fel, at the age of 3, was recently crowned as Little Miss Australasia Global 2021 held at Dockside Darling Harbour and with a special award, “Darling of the Crowd.”

She is very independent in her ADLs and responsible for tidying and cleaning her mess at her age.

Candice Tyra Geonzon Tarrant

Candice Tyra Geonzon Tarrant is a 12-year-old Filipino Australian. She is the only daughter of Randy Tarrant and Cheryl Tarrant. Her dad, Randy, has been a Timber sales consultant and expert wood machinist for over 20 years and her mother, Cheryl, is a full-time night shift nurse and a beauty Queen – the reigning Woman of the Universe Australia 2021, Woman of the Universe Tourism 2021 and Mrs. Universe Australia Finalist 2022.

Following the footsteps of her beauty Queen mother, Candice was recently crowned Miss Earth Junior Air Australia 2021 and Miss Junior Australasia Official 2021. Candice has a passion for helping other people through her recycling advocacy. She has been collecting empty bottles, cans, and cartons for two years now. She donated 300 AUD or 10,000 pesos as COVID 19 Assistance in Iloilo, Philippines, last year from recycling.

This year, in collaboration with her mother, they came up with an event “Appreciation Day for Aged Care Workers” where they will provide lunch for Aged Care workers from selling their preloved items and recycling set in December with the hope that the restriction in Aged care will ease by that month. She also performed in various Aged Care Facilities to help fund Dementia Australia.

Candice is also an active performer and a member of the Team Fuchsia Performance Troupe of Stepaside Studios West Ryde for over seven years now. This year, she has eight dance lessons: Youth Cheer, L3 Ballet, L3 Jazz, Intermediate Acrobatics, Intermediate Hip-hop, L2 Tap, Trio Hip-hop, and Performance Troupe. This year, they have won several dance competitions, and they are competing for National Hollywood Bound in January 2022.

Candice was awarded as Most Outstanding Junior Dancer of 2019; this year, she performed the lead role as Sophie in the Enchanted Dance concert held in Pioneer Theatre Castle Hill. This year, she also completed her Classical Ballet examination with Honours by Australian Dance Vision. During her primary years, while other kids were on their lunch break, Candice volunteered twice a week as Library Monitor in their school. She is also the lead dancer of their Wakikiri School Performing Dance, a member of the senior dance troupe, and a school representative in netball.

She was awarded PSSA Best and Fairest Junior Netball 2019 and Mandarin High Achievement 2019 of WRPS. She will be in her 7th year at Marist Sisters Woolwich. When she grows up she wants to be a Physiotherapist, particularly a dance and sports physiotherapist. Candice aspires to be a print ad and a runway model as well. She is under the management of the Starfish Kids talent agency. Candice is looking forward to receiving her award as Sydney’s Best Dressed 2021 Awardee this year.

Joanna Gunay is a 33-year-old wife and proud mother of two beautiful children, a 5-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. She was born in the Philippines and raised here in Sydney, Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor in Oral health from the University of Sydney in 2008 and currently works as a specialist in Orthodontic practice.

Joanna enjoys an active lifestyle, being outdoors, and spending time with her family. Some of her passions include fitness, fashion, health, and well-being. She started modelling after being scouted by an agency and since then has worked with different photographers and walked the runway for various well-renowned designers.

She was Miss Philippines-Australia 2012, and during her reign, Joanna represented the Australian-Filipino community through various social and charity events in Australia and the Philippines.

Her advocacy promotes awareness of women and children suffering domestic violence and helps create change. She believes that true beauty radiates from within and would like to use this platform to inspire, uplift, and empower other women to value their self-worth and reach their full potential. Some of the Mrs. Universe Australia Official pageant titles and awards she recently won include Mrs. Universe Australia Official 2022, Mrs. Chocolate Day Spa 2022, Best in Catwalk, and Best in Swimwear.

We recently caught up with Joanna to discuss her journey in the industry, and here’s what went down:

How did you get into the pageant industry?

I would watch the annual Miss Philippines -Australia pageant, and I always had the thought of joining at the back of my mind. I never had the confidence to participate until a visit to my hairdresser, Ching Mercado. She encouraged me to go for it, and she also became my pageant coach and hair and makeup artist. That same year, I was scouted by a modelling agency which also exposed me to the fashion world and sparked my interest in exploring the pageantry world.

What do you like most about being a beauty queen?

As a proud wife and mother of two children, being a beauty queen with the title ‘Mrs’ adds more meaning because it is a testament to my strength as a woman and as a mother to lead by example and to be a role model for my kids that nothing is impossible and no dream is too big. Being able to share this experience with my children, especially my 5-year-old daughter, has been so special. To see her face light up with pride when she sees me on the stage has been absolutely endearing.

Downside to being a beauty queen?

One of the challenges is finding the balance between being a beauty queen and family life. Sometimes, my schedule can get quite busy, and juggling work, motherhood, and the responsibilities of a beauty queen can be difficult.

What has been the most memorable experience of being in the industry so far?

I had the opportunity to do some charity work in the Philippines, which included visiting and donating to an orphanage and providing scholarships to some college students. It was very rewarding to see all our efforts and hard work in fundraising come to fruition and extremely uplifting to know the significant impact this would have in the lives of so many disadvantaged and less fortunate within the community.

Who have been the most interesting people you’ve met so far in the industry?

I’ve had the pleasure to get to know Miriam Scott, the CEO and founder of Barelife Naturals Australia and owner of Chocolate Day Spa- one of the sponsors for Mrs. Universe Australia Official. Coming from an impoverished background and achieving everything she has accomplished today, her life story is one of resilience and unwavering determination.

I am honoured to be one of the Barelife Naturals Australia and Chocolate Day Spa models to help bring her vision of a peaceful and sustainable world to life through this organic hub of beauty products.

It’s also been an honour to get to know Maryrose Salubre, the CEO and founder of Mrs. Universe Official, and the different candidates during the Mrs. Universe Australia pageant and hear and be inspired by their different life journeys.

What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned while in the beauty pageant industry.

With the pressures and expectations of the beauty pageant industry, you can easily lose sight of yourself. I have learned the importance of being humble, staying true to yourself, and being confident in who you are despite criticism and negativity. To have the courage to stand by your beliefs and value your self-worth.

Is your family supportive of you being a beauty queen?

Absolutely. They are my biggest supporters! I am truly grateful to my family for their relentless love and support over the years and their unyielding faith in me. They are my inspiration and driving force to continue doing what I love.

If you could go back in a time machine to the time when you were just getting started, what would you do differently?

To be honest, as cliché as it may sound, I really wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve enjoyed every part of my journey, and I’ve learned and grown through each experience to better myself.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

My parents instilled in me to always believe in myself at a young age. That advice has brought me to where I am today.

What are your future plans? Inside pageantry or out of it.

I will continue to promote my advocacy of domestic violence and women empowerment and be involved in charity events to help those underprivileged within our community. It is a privilege to have this platform to promote awareness, help create change, and be a voice for those who feel silenced.

Pageantry has also ignited my love and passion for modelling, and after a few years away from it, I would like to continue modelling again. I am very excited for my reign as Mrs. Universe Australia official 2022, leading up to the big event of the Mrs. Universe Official International pageant later this year.

Announcing The Official Launch of Mrs. Universe Official!

The Mrs. Universe Official Pageant is the quest to discover the world’s most outstanding married woman who’s looking to make a difference and make her mark in the world. Contestants must be married as of the date of entry, at least 18 years of age, as well as a resident of the country in which they compete. 

The Mrs. Universe Official Pageant also aims to bridge the gap between fashion, modeling, and pageantry. Its aim is to set a new standard in fashion, modeling, and pageantry. This is a life-changing opportunity for married women with a unique look and poise, lively personality, and passion for pageantry, fashion, and modeling. This is a competition that is designed to give ambitious women the opportunity to be a part of the national and international fashion modeling industry.   

Mrs. Universe Official is dedicated to women’s empowerment on a global scale. The Mrs. Universe Official organization is committed to helping women find their voice so that they can become powerful and unstoppable. The pageant believes that all women have a “Fierce Woman” inside them, and its mission is to create a vehicle that can reach inside and free their inner fierceness. Its mission is to empower women, facilitate change, and tap into their inner power.

The pageant will highlight and bring to light women with substance. Mrs. Universe Official is the brainchild of Maryrose Salubre who founded Salubre Models back in 2006. Maryrose’s journey from initially establishing Salubre Models in 2006 led to a number of high-profile projects such as the Australasia Official pageant which was established in 2014, the International Golden Sash Awards, Sydney’s Best Dressed, and ultimately, Mrs. Universe Official.

Mrs. Universe Official also aims to empower, engage and inspire women of all cultures and backgrounds. The pageant’s goal is to build their self-confidence to the point that they become global ambassadors whose goal is to inspire change in the world. Announcing The New Mrs. Universe Australia 2021, Susan Turner!

MS Entertainment Network, the company behind Mrs. Universe Official, has decided to strip Ms. Kristine (“Tootsie”) Aseron Santos of the title of Mrs. Universe Australia 2021 which was conferred upon her on the 30th of October 2021 by its Managing Director Maryrose Salubre with immediate effect.

The reason for the decision taken was Ms. Kristine’s failure to comply with certain obligations required of her, concerning her non-attendance at the crowning of the last Mrs. Universe Australia 2022 event held on the 26th of December 2021 and certain other serious issues concerning her conduct and performance during the tenure of her appointment.

On that note, the Mrs. Universe Official organisation has decided to appoint Susan Turner as Ms. Kristine’s replacement. Moving forward, Mrs. Susan Turner will bear the title of Mrs. Universe Australia 2021.

Mrs. Susan Turner came from a wonderful family with a mother who was a head nurse and a beauty queen; her father loved to sing at weddings and was also known as a famous unbeaten boxer and a long-distance runner.

Mrs. Turner has been married to Steven Turner for 31 years, and together they have eight children who have grown up to be amazing adults. She’s also a proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren and has been a French bulldog breeder for 15 years. Her primary profession is in the beauty industry – she runs her own beauty salon.

When Mrs. Turner was only seven years old, she won the little miss MS multiple sclerosis pageant; this started her journey towards her passion as a beauty queen. From there, she worked tirelessly with her mother in many charities. In fact, her charity hours amount to around 60.000 hours, and she has raised over $100,000.00 in 2018/2019 through various car shows. Some of the charities she supports include Domestic violence association Sydney, MS multiple sclerosis, Child’s vision Australia, Breast cancer foundation, Wesley mission, Salvation Army, Cystic fibrosis foundation, Starlight foundation, and Destiny Rescue.

She is the director of the “I hear voices” parent support form for addiction and has worked alongside the justice system to help prevent criminal activities. She also has her own show car – a Subaru WRX my05. This car has been used to raise much-needed money at various car shows around Australia.

As a featured public figure influencer, Mrs. Turner is a global mentor within the pageant industry to all beauty queens worldwide. She has also won many awards as a beauty queen, including Mrs. Earth Air Australia 2017, Mrs. International Global Australia 2018, Mrs. international Global Australia 2018, Humanitarian International 2018, Woman of the World 2018, and AGSA’s International Beauty Queen of the year 2019.

Mrs. Turner’s passion has led her worldwide, seeing firsthand many disturbing events such as famine and disease. Because of that, she helps many other situations around the world. Sue is currently the CEO of GEQ (Global Elite Queens) magazine, and her vision is to give voice to those who inspire to become the best they can be in their industry.

This year, the 2022 Mrs. Universe Official pageant will take place around October in Sydney, Australia, where Mrs. Turner will crown her successor and pass on her crown to the new Mrs. Universe Official winner. Further details will be announced at a later date.

Spotlight On Jojo Almazora Sebastian: A Glimpse To Pageant Hosting

Before Jojo Almazora Sebastian becomes the first Hall of Famer Pageant Host Inductee of the Australian Golden Sash Awards, the hosting wonder from Down Under, share a recollection from his reckless youth years in Laguna with its bucolic charms, laidback surroundings, and the kindest of people, an unforgettable all by myself past time: “I was always in front of the mirror, with a comb on my hand as my pretend microphone.”

That season under the sun, the hosts who were en vogue are Martin Nievera, who babbled and out talked his Filipino celebrity guest in the late-night talk show “Martin After Dark” and Johnny Litton, the televised conversations with the new moneyed and seasoned bourgeoisie, had a considerable impact on the pubescent Sebastian.

The winner of the TV Presenter award from Aberdeen Fashion Arts and Media Awards, however, gives credit to the main person who was instrumental in planting the “hosting seed” to him, the one and only Josephine Sebastian, his mommy dearest.

He shares: “I believe it is my mom who brought about it during my early childhood. You know, she has a strong and pleasing personality, and it seems like in all the programs of the various organizations she was part of, her task was to be the host. She tagged me along in those hosting gigs, and I was always mesmerized by the way she handled herself on stage. She was always confident, in and out of it, but she had a special aura about when she held the microphone. I remember her eyes twinkled. She beamed. Her smile was radiant! Seeing my mommy Josephine on stage, made me feel good. I am so proud her.”

When his time to host happened, it was in a local beauty pageant in his hometown. He was a young man of sixteen summers then: “The stage was all mine that time because my co-host did not arrive. Was I a nervous wreck? Of course! But you know, when I was 16, I was not the type who will chicken out to an event just because I will be going solo. I did give it my best, and I should say, I passed with flying colours I guess because, at the end of the gig, they gave me a talent fee of P500. From that earning, I bought a Penshoppe shirt that I was saving for the longest time. “

The shirt, he has kept it, neatly tucked in closet in his home away from home, in Hawaii. A wonderful memento of how, when, and where he lost his hosting virginity.

Sebastian admits that nowadays, he still gets nervous when he does hosting. He explains: “I believe it is important to keep all those butterflies in your stomach, to be a little ill-at-ease, to be even huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf. When you do something that you love, all these feelings, are part and parcel of it. “

“For me, all of these means, that am not overconfident and I am not complacent with what I do that is why the good kind of nervousness is still present,” the Ryan Seacrest and Xian Lam hosting admirer carries on. “Being overconfident or complacent, I never want to be in such a predicament. “

How does he conquer his stage jitters? Sebastian’s swift reply: “Believe it or not, I learned to realize as I mature as a host that the amount of energy you spent in being nervous is the same when you are excited, you know. What I do is that I psyche myself by talking to the candidates before the pageant starts. IT does do me good to have short and sweet conversations with them.”

With 22 pageants under his belt and more of them are about to transpire in the nearest future, Sebastian’s impart what he thinks are his strengths that pageant organizers recognize and appreciate: “My main role as a host is to make sure that I showcase each and every candidate. Usually, I request permission from the pageant organizers that I will be given permission to chitchat with them. To know them a little better and not just rely on what are written on the cue cards. I do my research as well so that come pageant time, I will be able to give the most import information about the ladies. They are after all, the central figures to any given pageant.”

Some do’s and don’ts in pageant hosting, Sebastian imparts: “Never outshine your co-host, if you have one. You must work as a team. I make it point to rehearse with my co-host, with the permission of course from the pageant organizers. Also, this night is for the ladies, so they must be front and centre and not you. Never take away their moment to shine. They rely on you to have their moment on the stage and it is imperative to give that to them. I don’t cut their answers during the casual interviews. I smile at them, look them in their eyes. And make them feel that my sincerity and I am there to listen to their answers. I am their friend on stage.”

Jojo’s favourite pageant segment: “Oh, it is always the awarding of the winner,” he declares. “There is a magic that is so palpable when the awarding of the winner happens. The joy is authentic. You know, these ladies worked hard for it. Being a candidate is not walk in the park and the one who becomes queen truly deserves all the accolade and love.”

The low downs in the world of pageant hosting are a plenty. Sebastian divulges: “The criticisms can be savage and I had my share of social media bullying. Some of criticisms of course are objective. A handful are amusing. And there are a lot who are just there to nit-pick or undermine you simply because the one they root for did not make the cut. They think since I am the host, I did not announce the right name. “

“Some pageant fans are passionate about the queens they support,” Sebastian continues. “Instead of them carrying out their disgust and gripes to the organizers, since I am the host, I am the easiest target of their bashing and hating. I just take it all in stride knowing that their feelings are eating them up. There is a ready document, the paper that contains the name of the queen that can be shown to those who continue to pester and are not gracious in accepting the reality of it all.”

“I keep myself current by making sure that my skills are in check, my information is up to date and my humility intact by embracing the fact that there is no formula to pageant hosting and my learning continues,” avers Sebastian about his edge. “I also love doing and trying new things when it comes to hosting. Being current does not mean totally forgetting your foundation, it means that your growth is constant and the hunger to learn and hone your new skills set are for real. Observing. Researching. And communicating well helps you to evolve. You know, I constantly remind myself that I am only as good as my last hosting gig. All the congratulations, I put it to my heart and not in my head.”

In conclusion, the future is indeed rainbow coloured and sparkling for Jojo Sebastian as he wants to realize: “Hosting the Oscar’s perhaps? That will be a blast. Or maybe, the most coveted beauty title of all, the Miss Universe. Wow! That is some dream, huh! Or an awards night in my beloved Philippines, I think that spells and screams fun!”

Thirteen worthy queens were crowned on Sunday, December 26, 2021, as a lead-up to next year’s International Grand Finals, and the coronation night turned out to be a smashing success!

The Mrs. Universe Official Australia 2022 coronation night went down at Dockside, Darling Harbour. This year’s cream of the crop for Mrs. Universe Official Australia consisted of Lili Cao, Rukeshma Sharma Lata, Joanna Gunay, Patricia Singh, Vannet Meas, Debasrita Mukherjee, Susan Turner, Cheryl Tarrant, Tanya Sreepattha, Kimanh Dinh, Monique Cantalejo Rivera, Christine Escalante and Ceres Calizo Ledesma.

This year’s coronation night also included the crowning of Little Mr/Miss Australasia Official, Sydney’s Best Dressed 2021, and The Australian Golden Sash Awards 2021, plus a glimpse into the 2021 Cover Models of StarCentral Media Group.

It is very easy to believe that Maryrose Salubre possesses a Midas touch. Her successes so far have been numerous, both on the personal stage and in the pageantry spotlight. She’s a breast cancer survivor and a national director of several pageants. She evolved from a beauty pageant contestant into a national director. She is the founder of Salubre Models Inc and has seen the rapid growth of the four pageants under the Australasia Official banner – Miss Teen/Miss/Mr/Mrs. Australasia. She’s also the current national director of Mrs. Universe Australia and the founder of The Australian Golden Sash Awards and Sydney’s Best Dressed.

The title could not have been more apt for Maryrose. Her achievements have shown her to be a woman of grit, determination, and yes, courage. She has used her personal struggles as a springboard for initiatives to help others. After beating breast cancer, she became a fervent advocate for breast cancer awareness. Maryrose was not idle when Typhoon Yolanda swept through her hometown of Bunga, Leyte, in 2013 and heavily damaged the Bunga National High School and Bunga Elementary School. The 4 Australasia Official pageants have all raised funds for breast cancer, BrainStorm (a charity dedicated to research into brain tumours run between Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney), and for the rebuilding of the two Bunga schools as well as providing them with much-needed supplies.

Maryrose has definite hopes for her involvement in the Mrs. Universe pageant, and it’s in keeping with her ever-present goal to be a voice for others who feel powerless. She hopes to bring awareness to the exploitation of animals and animal cruelty and shine an even bigger spotlight on domestic violence. She wants to break down the stereotype of pageants being all about beauty and show that they can be a powerful tool in bringing attention to a wide variety of causes. Maryrose also dreams of using her time in the Mrs. Universe pageant to open more doors to her work, building kindergartens and orphanages not just in her hometown but in other areas that desperately need them.

Maryrose wants to go global, and her plans are big – Guinness World Records-big. She longs to see children housed adequately in an environment where they are safe and clean and have the opportunity to attend school. The Salubre legacy will be one of substance, confidence, courage, compassion, and a job well done. Maryrose is well on her way to achieving this goal and making it one that will be well remembered and admired.
