Sheridan Mortlock: The Multifaceted Beauty Championing Sustainability and Advocacy
Sheridan Mortlock is more than just a name in the fashion world. A dynamic model and influencer, she has collaborated with some of the most prestigious brands, including Bec+Bridge, Sass&Bide, Alice McCall, Manning Cartell, and Seafolly. However, her passion extends beyond the runway. Currently, she’s pursuing a dual degree in Global Sustainability and Politics at the University of Wollongong, reflecting her commitment to personal growth and creating positive change in the world.
Sheridan’s journey to success was not without its challenges. After competing for the Miss Earth Australia crown in both 2019 and 2020, her perseverance finally paid off in 2022 when she was crowned Miss Earth Australia. This achievement allowed her to represent Australia at the Miss Earth International pageant in Manila, Philippines, where she earned the prestigious title of Miss Earth Air 2022. This moment marked a significant milestone in her career and solidified her status as a prominent figure in the pageant world.
In an exclusive interview with MS Entertainment Magazine, Sheridan opened up about her experiences in the pageant industry, sharing insights and aspirations that reveal the dedication and passion driving her forward.
Breaking Into the Pageant World
Sheridan’s entry into the pageant world began at 16 when she competed in Miss Teen Australia. “The experience, while fun, completely overwhelmed me,” she admits. It wasn’t until she turned 19 that she decided to give pageants another go, this time stepping out of her comfort zone to try something new. “I joined Miss Earth Australia because I love the message and awareness it is spreading,” she says. “The protection of our environment is as urgent as ever, and I believe that the more people are aware of what is happening and the actions they can take, the better.” From that moment, Sheridan has never looked back.
Championing Sustainability and Positive Change
Sheridan’s advocacy revolves around the idea that everyone can make small changes in their daily habits to impact the world positively. “Whether it be switching from plastic bags to reusable ones, using a bamboo toothbrush, or shopping locally,” she explains. A firm believer in slowing down fast fashion, she advocates for buying second-hand clothes or hiring clothing as the best way forward.
Memorable Moments and Valuable Lessons
When asked about her most memorable experience in the pageant industry, Sheridan finds it difficult to pinpoint just one moment. “Being part of the pageant industry has opened doors of opportunity that I would never have been privy to if I hadn’t participated,” she reflects. “Meeting so many different people and getting to experience events such as AGSA are definitely memorable.”
As for the most valuable lesson she’s learned, Sheridan highlights the importance of self-reflection and personal growth. “I didn’t realise how much self-reflection and personal growth would come from pageants. I definitely feel as though I fast-tracked working on myself and am surer of who I am as a person because of pageants,” she shares. “Knowing who you are as a person and standing up for your beliefs is a crucial part of not just the pageant industry, but life in general.”
Staying Grounded in a Competitive Industry
Despite working in an industry that often emphasises outward characteristics, Sheridan believes it’s about much more than appearances. “What you stand for and what you’re doing to help better the world are definitely looked at,” she says. She also stresses the importance of avoiding comparison: “Comparison can quickly drain your inspiration and fill you with self-doubt. My biggest tip is to put on your metaphorical horse blinders and focus on yourself and what you’re doing in your lane.”
Support from Family and Future Plans
Sheridan is grateful for her family’s support, even though the pageant industry was initially unfamiliar to them. “They support me in any way they can,” she says. “I was so grateful that my parents and all of my grandparents were able to come to the Miss Earth Australia show this year. This was not an easy trip for them, and I feel so lucky that my family will fly out to support me and cheer me on while competing.”
Looking ahead, Sheridan has plans to complete her double degree in Global Sustainability and Politics, with two more years of full-time study ahead. “I want to push through that and then see what other doors of opportunity await me on the other side,” she says.
Sheridan Mortlock’s story is a powerful example of how beauty, brains, and passion for a cause can come together to create a meaningful impact. Her journey continues to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness, stand up for what they believe in, and make a positive difference in the world.
